Welcome! Mira's Movement is a pediatric cancer advocacy organization dedicated to making people aware of the devastating impact that cancer has upon children and their families. Through various awareness-raising activities, we hope to create broader support for funding pediatric cancer research and assisting families caring for a child with cancer. Do you know that pediatric cancer is the leading disease killer of children in the United States? Or that 46 children are diagnosed with cancer every school day? Do you know that, according to the National Cancer Institute, pediatric cancer as a whole received only $171 million in 2007? Pediatric cancer encompasses 200 different diagnoses, 120 of which are brain tumors. The average age of a child who dies from cancer is 6. That's an average of 70 years of life lost.* Not enough is being done to better understand childhood cancer—what causes it and how to better treat it. It's not because there aren't enough researchers ready to do this work. It's because there isn't enough public and private funding to move it ahead. If kids could vote, this would change! And if most parents of children with cancer weren't busy taking care of them, hoping to save their lives, they'd be more vocal advocates. For these reasons, many voices are not being heard, and we intend to do something about it.
