Awareness
The third aspect of the Mira’s Movement mission is to raise public awareness of the prevalence and impact of childhood cancer. We do this through community events and communications, and as an extension of all of our work. It is our belief that as more people become aware of the facts of childhood cancer, that they will join us in our efforts to support funding for research and to offer programs to families. Through education comes change.
Many Americans don’t know that
- Cancer is the leading disease killer of children (ages 0-19) in the United States—more than the next five diseases combined.
- One in 330 American children will be diagnosed before they turn 19.
- Although many advancements have been made in the treatment of childhood cancer in the past 25 years, the overall 5 year survival rate is 78%--meaning 8 out of the 36 children diagnosed every day in the United States will lose their life.
- There has been one drug developed specifically for childhood cancer in the last 25 years. (It is for recurrent leukemia.)
- The 5 year survival rate for children with brain cancer is about 60%.
- There are some childhood cancers that have no successful treatment.
- September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Please wear a gold ribbon!
Please join us in speaking up for kids with cancer.
